Captain Jack: Tell me about Mona Wales.
Mona: I grew up in Northern California, the Bay area. I went to St. John’s college and I studied ancient Greek philosophy. I have all these different phases in my life. I used to be an organic farmer; I used to sell antiques; I did a brief stint as a hyper religious person…but that’s all in the past. CJ: Can I ask how old you are?
Mona: I’m 32 next week (March 14).
CJ: What country are you spending your birthday in?

CJ: How long have you been in the industry now?
Mona: 6 years.
CJ: When did you lose your virginity?
Mona: I was not a very sexual person but I was curious so I paid my marijuana dealer to deflower me on my 16th birthday.
CJ: Wow, lucky guy.

CJ: How was it being with a gay man? Did he get into it at all?

I got into pornography late, when I was 25, and it was because I felt I missed out on a lot of stuff. I spent years with the church after college and I felt like I didn’t have the experiences that other people had and I wanted to make up for lost time.

CJ: Do you think it was a better idea to enter the industry when you were 25 as opposed to 18?
Mona: Oh God, I have so much respect for the young girls that are able to do sex work, especially pornography, because the mental strength that it takes to occupy a world that doesn’t appreciate your life choices and wants to shit on you constantly and have access to you through the internet constantly, I’m in awe. I was definitely not strong enough to do it then.
CJ: I never understood the mentality of watching these girls and pleasuring yourself to them yet you rip on them. It’s like self-hate.
Mona: Right! It’s shame! You’re taking on so many male psyches at once when you’re a 19-year old pornstar. I can only imagine. You’re getting all of this validation with all of this hatred. It would be such a mind fuck…I can’t even understand it. Even as a 25-year old, there was stuff that I had to contend with. You can’t let other people’s opinions of you dictate your happiness or emotional stability.
CJ: That leads to my next question, when you got into it, were you aware of the social stigma attached to being a porn star and how it might affect your life forever?
Mona: I think I was in a bubble. I was living in San Francisco; I had already been doing professional domination work for 2 ½ years so I had a network of peers that were supporting me through this. I saw the Armory every day on my walk to BART and I thought I should apply to work for Kink.com. It’s an amazing resource and it’s right there and it’s a castle. ‘I want to go in there!’ So I didn’t really think of the stigma because I was already doing sex work. I kind of made up my mind about that and I was pretty out about it, my domination work, to my friends and family. I don’t think the stigma is something you completely get over. It’s the oxygen you breathe.
CJ: How did you come up with your stage name?
Mona: Mona was a childhood nickname and my best friend was this wonderful old lady named Sunny and she and I were walking our dogs. I told her I was getting into porn and needed a last name. She said, ‘MoansALot’. No, that wasn’t going to be it. What about Mona Wales and that’s how I came to be. There’s a little double entendre and it’s a little cheesy.
CJ: Was there any nervousness when you started filming? I mean all these people are there watching you fuck. What was your first scene like?
Mona: Oh God, yes. That first day, I remember waking up and it was the first time I had ever waxed my vagina! I couldn’t even get through that. I had them do half one day and I walked out. I had to go back and get the other half waxed. I was incredibly nervous but then I got on set and my first scene was with a trans woman named Francesca. CJ: What have you learned about yourself sexually since joining porn?
Mona: Yes. I guess I used to think it was all about people. Before the industry, I said, ‘Well I’m really attracted to this person so I want to have sex with them.’ I think that verbiage got changed in porn from people to activities. So it’s not like ‘I really want to be with this person!’ It’s more ‘I really want to get choked out!’
CJ: You’ve already given me a couple stories, give me a couple more of wild things you’ve done in your life.
