Brad Newman Talks with Captain Jack
Brad is a seasoned porn star who has been in the industry for 5 years. He has appeared in scenes for all of the major studios and brings it every time out! He gave some very thoughtful and interesting answers to my questions so I hope you learn something! I also did a written interview for her because some people prefer it that way.
Captain Jack: How did you get your start in porn?
Brad Newman: That’s a good question. My grandma got me into acting when I was 15. I did a musical in high school and then I studied it in college. I wanted to do mainstream acting so, out of college, I got agents in a couple of states and I was auditioning and booking local gigs. I was, ‘You know what? Let me come out to LA and see if I can make it in the big time.’ Things didn’t work out but I developed a set of skills. I was raised by 3 generations of women; my great-grandmother, my grandmother and my mother and I’ve just always loved women. I was like, you know what, maybe I can do something in this line of business. To make a long story short, I tried other jobs, didn’t really like them and I kept trying to do the mainstream acting thing. Then one night, I was at the gym, I ran into Brazzers performer Nicolette Shea. I recognized her and came up and introduced myself to her. We got some food and we were talking and, to be honest, I wasn’t even trying to get into the business. I just thought that maybe if I slept with her, my confidence would get higher. And I booked one of these auditions that I got called back for but wasn’t booking. I’m hitting it off with her and I show her a little video that I had of this women blowing me. And I said, ‘What do you think about that?’ And she says, ‘Is that your dick?’ And I said, ’Why would it be someone else’s?’ ‘That’s a good point!’ She goes, ‘Do you want to do it?’ I thought we were going to have sex and I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ She makes a call to Kieran Lee and is like, ’Hey, I have a guy here that would be great for the business. I need to get an agent.’ She gets a number from him of an agent and I met him the next day. I thought this would be a really cool line of work, ‘Can I do this? Am I going to make enough money to support my family? Will I be happy?’ I went on this soul-searching journey for two weeks and I thought, ‘What would I do if money was no object?’ I thought I could really enjoy my life like this if I played my cards right and took care of myself and I figured the money would come. And, so, we’re here a couple of years later and things have gone pretty well.
CJ: I have to ask, being raised by 3 generations of women, what do they think about you doing porn?
Brad: That’s a good question. Well, most of them have passed, God bless their souls. I would like to think they would be very supportive of myself. It’s not something I really talk about with my family. I feel like a lot of people get misunderstood in this business. I worry about some preconceived notions whether or not that I can get her to change the way that she thinks or not. I don’t have any problems there.
CJ: What kind of jobs did you have before porn. You were a struggling actor, did you have any regular jobs?
Brad: I did. I had a lot of regular jobs. My last job I had was Angie’s List. It’s funny because when I was going through training, it was really boring, and I was listening to these people trying to teach me this stuff and I was thinking, ‘Why am I not just doing adult?’ I would look at these other people doing adult and think, ‘Man, that’s a great job!’ It’s funny how that came full circle from that job. I worked at AFLAC for a little while. My first job out of college was Quill. I worked for a warehouse like Staples. I would go business to business, door to door, selling paper, ink, I’m like, ‘You’re going to buy it eventually! I’m saving you a trip to the store! It’s never going to go bad! I understand how you feel but what I’ve found….’ I was doing these sales job and it was great learning people. I learned all these sales techniques but the double-sided sword is whenever I see anyone use sales techniques on me, it raises a red flag. And I’m like, ‘I know what’s going on here!’
CJ: You’re first time on set, did you find it difficult at all because you have the cameras, you have the people watching, was it difficult to perform in front of someone?
Brad: Absolutely. Absolutely. I don’t think anything really prepares you for that. Just because you know there’s expectations. The first scene that I had, there were 6 extras in it. They really threw me in the deep end. Luckily, I had prepared a lot through my life through different things. I thought that I was ready for it but, honestly, I don’t think anyone can ever be ready for it. It’s almost like the first year, you’re trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t work. It’s not like they’ve written a book on this. You think you know your body but when push comes to shove, and the cameras are on, and you’re someone you’ve never been with a bunch of people you’ve never met and you’re the only guy naked…it’s like Mike Tyson said, ‘You have a gameplan until you get punched in the mouth.’ That first year, you just have to do trial and error and you hope the error’s not too bad to end everything. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to figure things out. Now, it’s more like a routine. The more I’m dialed in and stick to my routine, the more I feel like I’m in the zone, I’m able to get into a good flow. It’s when the days are rushed or the girls change last minute or the scene before ran behind and you don’t start for another 5 hours and you’re sitting around, that’s when you get thrown out of your zone.
CJ: Most guys will say, ‘I can do porn! That’s no problem!’ I know how difficult it is for a guy in porn. What do you think are the most difficult things for a civilian to get in front of the camera?
Brad: That’s a good question. That’s a really good question. I think one of the biggest challenges I faced was being consistent day in and day out. Because some days, I’ll work 20 days in a row, 25 days in a row and on Day 18, you want that to be as good as Day 1 and Day 3 were. And some days, you’ll feel that everyday working has been good to get you into a flow and a rhythm and you’re getting your reps in. Some days, it’ll just be too much. You have to know how to rest. You have to know how to stay in shape. Because if you’re working all the time, sometimes you’re not going to the gym. Finding a balance, I feel like, is one of the hardest parts of being a male performer. And not being overzealous. You start dealing with these very beautiful women. A lot of times, you haven’t dealt with this many beautiful women like this in your life. They have different experiences and personalities that maybe you’re not used to. Sometimes you have to know when to shut the fuck up, sometimes you have to know when to be complimentary, sometimes you have to know when to be more business. I feel like the social nature of the beast is one of the hardest parts to learn and the physicality of the day in and day out.

CJ: You just mentioned that sometimes you get these really hot girls that are new, have you ever found it difficult to not pop right away when you’re with someone new?
Brad: More than I would like because I like to think by now that I’m pretty well trained but somedays, you just have to know how to control the thing. I’ll try to keep it going until the very last minute then I’ll have a ‘Hold on! Cut everything!’ and then just pray to baby Jesus that nothing happens! One time I did this scene for Naughty America with Crystal Rush and we’re in reverse cowgirl and she was just putting it down on me like one of the best in the world. And I had to pull out and try not to cum and I looked and it was just dribbling out. I was, ‘Oh no!’ And then I go back in and keep going. Luckily, I was able to not lose my wood and was able to finish and everything. Sometimes you worry about having that refractory period if you would have an accident. Most directors I’ve worked with, if it happens, go with it and we’ll cut and pick it up in a few which is a good feeling to have. It’s never happened for me to have to do that but it is the nature of the business. I think any guy that doesn’t have that happen to them is doing something artificial to make their stuff work or they’re just not into women.
CJ: I know with girls, they have to arch and open up and all that, how is it different for you to have sex on-camera compared to off?
Brad: I think a lot of times, things that go unnoticed. For example, if you’re in a little room with a crew of 8 people, there’s not a lot of oxygen in that room. You’ve had the lights on and it’s been a couple of hours. They’ve shot pretty girls, maybe you’ve shot stills and the air’s been drawn out of that room. No one’s even thinking about that. A lot of times, you’re suffocated in there. You’re not even ready for it. A lot of times, you’ll go into a room and it’s cold in there and you’re on stone and you’re feeling it up through your body. That’s something else you’re not ready for, being able to hold your body temperature. One time, I was shooting in a hot tub in 100 degree weather, 105 maybe, in the middle of the day! It’s draining you so it’s stuff like that I’ve found that I wasn’t really prepared to have to deal with has been a problem.
